Choosing the Right Wood

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and ash are excellent choices because they burn hotter and cleaner, reducing the amount of creosote that accumulates inside the flue.

Avoid softwoods such as pine, which contain more sap and resin. These substances can lead to increased creosote buildup, requiring more frequent chimney cleanings.

Seasoned Wood

Always burn wood that has been properly seasoned. This means the wood has been dried for at least six months to a year, resulting in a moisture content below 20%.

Burning seasoned wood not only produces more heat but also minimizes the amount of smoke and soot, keeping your flue cleaner over time.

Storage Tips

Store your firewood in a dry, well-ventilated area off the ground to further reduce moisture content. Cover the top of the pile, but leave the sides open for airflow.

Avoid storing firewood directly against your house; instead, keep it in a shed or designated rack to prevent pests and facilitate drying.
